Prince – She’s Always In My Hair [24th March 1993 - Act I Tour]
Terry Gilliam is one of my favorite directors. Not that I was a particularly big Monty Python fan, but when I was 15 and trying to find my artistic voice, I saw “Brazil“, and lost my innocence. Everything I would learn about production design, subject matter for a film, even dialogue — was nonsense. I learned an appreciation for controlled chaos from Terry Gilliam that, depending on who you ask, spilled over into my personal life.
I’d heard that he had this piece of work with Heath Ledger, and that it was really great, but I thought that it would just end up being one of those legendary films we’d never see. Sort of like how you know Prince has like 100 songs that would each blow your mind but we’ll probably never hear them unless we’re on a couch in his house. Well, now that this film has been revealed at Cannes, there’s no turning back. This film is coming out. Check out the teaser that’s been going round for “The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus“. It’s sort of a shame that people are going to be watching this looking for Heath and not understand what attracted Heath to the project. I guess…whatever it takes to get people to the exhibit.
Okay, I’m the last one today to hear this, and I should have been FIRST!! This is the first (leaked) track from Mos Def’s upcoming album. This is not for everybody, but it is totally for me. Mos, I understand. the MF Doom thing, What you were saying on “Real Time”, now this…I get it.
When I watched Prince on Tavis recently I thought he was onto it…but he’s not totally there yet. He’s got to get all the code, learn the rules, but then, see beyond it. THEN we’re gonna get a Prince album that’s crazy. Looks like Mos is kinda there already.
Mos has been working through an artistic period that, if you step back and look at it, is impressive. Artists don’t suffer anymore. They go in commercial directions while they rest, sure, but I can see in the movie roles he’s chosen and the music he’s released…he’s working on something. I dont even know if THIS album is where he’s headed, but if he keeps going…he’s going to uncover something that is truly unique.
This is “Casa Bey”, from the upcoming “The Ecstatic”, and on it, Mos exhibits serious breath control over “Casa Forte” from Banda Black Rio. This is exactly where my head is — creatively — right now.
