Christoph Adami: Finding life we can’t imagine

How do we search for alien life if it’s nothing like the life that we know? At TEDxUIUC Christoph Adami shows how he uses his research into artificial life — self-replicating computer programs — to find a signature, a ‘biomarker,’ that is free of our preconceptions of what life is.

When you really dig into what he’s talking about, the implications for science fiction writing are huge. New definitions of “life” and the moral and scientific thoughts that come from said definitions could mean really interesting stories. Beyond the way that “Tron” and “Tron: Legacy” touched on these ideas, this could really take sci-fi to new heights by telling morality plays with a different voice.

It’s very difficult to change the world when its inhabitants think it’s there to entertain them.

I have seen a lot since the Earthquake hit Haiti. Mostly though? I’ve seen a lot of people talking. Raising money for relief efforts and coordinating folks on the ground is a taxing thing, but it’s the work we’re supposed to do. The criticism of Wyclef, while there are bodies yet to be discovered (and buried) is inappropriate and I’m sick of the armchair quarterbacking.

We’re human beings and we’re supposed to help each other without blinking. The fact that we hesitate — no, not hesitate, but justify our way out of our humanity — whether it’s to pass health care legislature or to throw a drowning person a branch, is what’s bringing us down as a species.
