Georgia Anne Muldrow – Roses
Over the last few days, her politics have been discussed here and there. It’s really easy to allow distractions to take us away from the main focus of an artist’s work…the art.
Georgia is no new jack who scored a deal. Her father is the late jazz guitarist Ronald Muldrow, and her mother is Rickie Byars-Beckwith, musical director of Agape Spiritual Center in Culver City, CA and Stepfather is Rev. Michael Beckwith who is best known for being a teacher in the Movie and book “The Secret”.
Listening to Georgia for a moment, it’s clear that she’s coming from another place (which would explain her being on Stones Throw) — a freer place, not held down by rules or labels. Haven’t we had enough of that? Haven’t we invented enough cutesy girl acts? Isn’t it time we had our own bold singer/musicians?
Knowing the rest of her work, when I heard this song first I felt like I did when I first heard Cassandra Wilson or DK Dyson, back in the early Steve Coleman days.
Watch this video of Georgia performing at Agape, then check her collabo with Mos Def. I know, you’d think everybody would have heard this by now, but everywhere I go I meet people who are not aware.
